  • The Staff of the United Nations Office in Nairobi congregated at their UN compounds to celebrate the former UNON And UN-HABITAT boss Anna Tibaijuka who resigned from office to pursue political office in Tanzainia. Tibaijuka joined the UN in September 2000 as the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT but was later promoted to the office of Head of UN organizations in Kenya. In attendance was Raila Odinga who praised Tibaijuka for her leadership at UNON. Tibaijuka will be remembered by Kenyans for championing the slum upgrading program which saw its first batch of slum dwellers move to spacious apartments adjacent to Kibera early this year. There were demonstrations by staff at Gigiri when she was removed from the position of head of UNON to pave way for the current head Achim Steiner who felt the position should have remained with an African.
